May 17, 2014 will be the 21st annual UC Irvine Undergraduate Research Symposium, and marks the inaugural year of the special Women in Research Symposium supported by UC Irvine’s Women’s Empowerment Initiative.

This year’s symposium theme, “Undergraduate Research: Growth through Innovation,” symbolizes how the systematic creativity inherent to the research process fosters personal, academic and societal growth. The stimulating day-long event promises to be exciting and educational.

Oral panel sessions and poster presentations will allow undergraduates from all disciplines to present their research, address questions and engage in discussions with other students, faculty, staff and members of the community.

The ACA: What’s In It for Women?

Event video »

Despite all the noise about the Affordable Care Act, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the enormous improvements for women’s health afforded by the ACA.

Come learn how the ACA is expanding coverage, increasing affordability, focusing on preventive care, and eradicating discriminatory practices to the substantial benefit of women.

Time permitting we’ll also discuss some of the latest legal, legislative and administrative developments affecting ACA implementation.

Allyson Sonenshine, J.D., has nearly 20 years of nonprofit, legal and volunteer experience in women’s health and reproductive justice.

She is the founding project director for the Orange County Women’s Health Project, a nonprofit that identifies gaps and facilitates improvements in local women’s health through data analysis, policy development, education and advocacy that brings together local women’s stakeholders at the annual Orange County Women’s Health Policy Summit.

She is a recipient of the Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award from the National Women’s Political Caucus – Orange County, and was recognized as a “2013 Woman to Watch” in OC Metro magazine.

Interview with Jean Houston
Speaking Event

Women’s Creativity and the Emerging New Story

Drawing upon her work in 108 countries and some 40 cultures, Jean Houston speaks about why one of the most important things to have ever happened in the last 5,000 years is the rise of women to full partnership with men in the domain of human affairs. This partnership between men and women results in an opportunity to re-think the ways in which we interact with one another.

Houston will inspire us with wonderful examples of how this shift is occurring and how women are leading this movement. She will engage us in thinking how we use our experiences to make the world a better place through “Women’s Creativity and the Emerging New Story.”

Join us for a night of thought-provoking insights, humor and inspiration.
